Pause the Pattern: Rethinking Challenging Behavior

Caring for children often means navigating challenging behaviors in real time, while also maintaining trust, consistency, and strong relationships with both children and families. Pause the Pattern helps nannies move beyond simply reacting to difficult behavior and instead consider what recurring behaviors may be communicating.

Participants will explore how behavior can be influenced by developmental skills, relationships, communication, environment, expectations, and unmet needs. Through a practical framework, nannies will learn how to recognize patterns, identify skills a child may still be developing, and respond more intentionally rather than becoming caught in recurring cycles of behavior and reaction.

Key Topics

  • Understanding behavior as communication rather than simply something to correct

  • Recognizing recurring patterns between a child’s behavior, the surrounding environment, and caregiver responses

  • Identifying developmental and social skills that may contribute to challenging behavior

  • Distinguishing between immediate behavior management and longer-term skill development

  • Responding intentionally while maintaining appropriate boundaries and expectations

  • Navigating the unique role of the nanny when supporting children within a family’s established routines, expectations, and parenting approaches

Interactive Components
The session includes guided reflection, group discussion, and realistic nanny-care scenarios that allow participants to practice applying the framework to situations they may encounter in their daily work.

Participant Takeaway
Nannies will leave with a practical way to pause during challenging moments, look beyond the immediate behavior, and make more intentional decisions about how to respond while supporting the child’s longer-term social and developmental growth.
